IFMGA GUIDE WHO HAS CLIMBED THE NORTH FACE OF THE EIGER IN A DAY

For more than a decade, Caroline George has lived for the vertical dimension, tackling some of the hardest ice and mixed routes, from the Alps and Ouray to Norway, Iceland, and the Canadian Rockies, as well as competing in the Ice Climbing World Cup. George is a fully certified IFMGA guide who has climbed the North Face of the Eiger in a day, ticked the Six Classic North Faces of the Alps, the north couloir of Breche des Drus, and a succession of the world’s hardest ice routes from Norway and New Hampshire to Antarctica and Canada. She’s also no stranger to ski mountaineering missions and has recently returned to skiing steeps after barely surviving a harrowing near-death fall.

Raised by climbing parents, George followed in their footsteps by sharpening her skills in the Swiss Alps, then earned her guiding certs in the male-dominated ranks in a profession steeped in alpine tradition. A true working guide, she has also participated in an impressive tick list of climbing expeditions that have taken her from Mt. Vinson, Antarctica, to the deeply carved fjords of Norway. She has put up new ice routes in three of those frozen locations—Norway, Canada, and Iceland. In the summer seasons George has journeyed to locations from Jordan’s Wadi Rum and Thailand’s Thaitanium Wall to Spain’s Picos de Europa and the Verdon Gorge of Southern France to climb classic big-wall routes in idyllic climbing destinations.

In 2012, George temporarily dialed the difficulty back, but remained active to her final day of pregnancy as she journeyed into motherhood. Her return to world-class climbing and steep, consequential skiing—while balancing the demands of motherhood and guiding—was a relentless pursuit she chronicled with deep insight during the next three years. The path to pursue this passion between daycare drop-offs and bedtime routines included an all-female ice climb of 280-meter, WI6+ Alpha Saule and Crack Baby (300m WI 6) as well as a Beyond Good and Evil (with a breast pump)(V 5+, 5c ) and Skredbekken, a 700m WI 6 line in Norway, a Powder Magazine trip to Arolla, Switzerland, with Drew Tabke, and a ski descent of the Marinelli Couloir, a 2,000-meter, 45-degree, extremely exposed classic line on the East Face of the Monte Rosa as well as an all-female ascent of the Colton Mac Intyre  on the 1200m long north face of the legendary Grandes Jorasses. George speaks four languages and supplements her guiding work as a translator while living the good life in Verbier. She has been profiled three times on Epic TV and operates the family guiding business, Into the Mountains (www.intothemountains.com), with her husband, Adam. George is a prolific contributor to the Live Your Adventure blog, and of course, a proud mom. Caroline likes to keep her guiding adventurous and travels the world to ski guide, from the Dolomites, to Lofoten in Norway, to Japan and likes to discover new places with clients.
